八面威風 (Bā miàn wēifēng)
(1) intimidating, commanding presence; aura of awesome might
Explanation:
To allude to great fame and power, with incomparable prestige.
The story dated back to the last years of the Yuan Dynasty when the feudal government was becoming more and more corrupted, with peasants everywhere raising the banner of rebellion: to revolt against the ruling of the Yuan Dynasty. At that time Zhu Yuanzhang had already led troops in capturing Heyang in Anhui province, and was preparing to continue the march southward.
[Note: I can’t seem to find Anhui Heyang in English sources. I will go back later and update reference link if there is anything new.]
On New Year’s Day, he and the grand general Xu Da were traveling together on a small boat, crossing the Yangtze River from its north bank.
The boat owner was an old couple and as the husband knew sitting in their boat was the famous Zhu Yuanzhang, he shouted out: “The holy heaven’s son is guarded by six dragons, [and] the grand general exudes awe-inspiring authority in all eight directions.” Zhu Yuangzhang understood this was a congratulatory message and his heart was overfilled with joy. He and Xu Da gently kicked one another’s foot to express their mutual congratulations. Zhu Yuanzhang would later unified the country, established the Ming Dynasty, and became the famous Emperor Ming Taizu in history. Ming Taizu found the boat owner from that year, gave him rewards, and painted his small boat a vermilion (deep red or scarlet) color to indicate [commemorate] his merit.
